History of Mary Valley Rattler

• 1911: Built between June 1911 and April 1915, the Mary Valley railway line branched out from the North Coast line and continued to Brooloo, Amamoor and Dagun. 
• 1913: In 1913, the Gympie station was built in a ‘Pagoda’ architectural style, which used to be the largest timber building in the Queensland railways. 
• 1970s: By the 1970s, the railway line turned unprofitable for use and a new railway line that bypassed Gympie was built in 1989. Soon after, passenger travel stopped completely. 
• 1996: In 1996, the local communities formed the Mary Valley Heritage Railway. They suggested restoring operations with a tourist line that started its first operation on 23rd May 1998. 
• 2012: Over time, the railway lines grew weaker and increasingly unsafe, after which, operations were stopped indefinitely in 2012.
• 2016: In June 2016, Gympie Regional Council allocated funds to restart the Mary Valley Heritage Line. The train was renamed Mary Valley Rattler and began operations in Oct 2018.
